Research Poetry

“Hardships in Escaping War Zone Related,” The Wyoming Tribune, Wed, 29  Aug 1914, p. 8, col. 4, Wyoming Digitial Newspaper Collection, (https://wyomingnewspapers.org: accessed 24 Nov 1914).

Marie's Foiled Trip

Your family's in the news

Learn of their lives from these clues

Family stories on each page
read and learn what’s all the rage.
Summer in Germany called to Marie
When war broke out, she wasn’t free

She took a boat and a train

lost some luggage to her disdain

She returned to the west

Summer with family was the best

Dedication: Marie Henrietta Wedemeyer was a teacher in Brooklyn and took summer trips to Germany. Her family immigrated to America from Germany, and she would visit relatives. When WWI broke out her summer trip was cut short. She never married or had children. I have the privilege of passing on her life history.

Why this poem: Newspapers are fun for most genealogists, but not everyone sees the joy of reading old newspapers. A short poem could be just the trick to inspire the unsuspecting family member into reading.
